Anti-Mod protection being triggered (Gungage)

Post by Jaggy » January 5th, 2019, 2:50 pm

I'm seeing the Anti-Mod warning screen on bootup of Gungage.

The protection for this title is listed as follows on Redump.org:

EDC No
Anti-modchip Yes
LibCrypt No

There doesn't appear to be a patch for this game on Console Copy World (or anywhere else on the internet it seems).
Is this game simply not playable with PS-IO?

Probably not if there is no PPF patch, unless PSIO implements the stealth code that the later mod chips used.

That shouldn't be hard; the stealth technique is to just stop spamming the regional "code" after two seconds or something. I would have assumed that was what the PSIO already did?

I would have assumed this was covered as well. In the systems manual (or FAQ, can’t remember which), it mentions that Libcrypt games will need to be patched, but mentions nothing about Anti-Mod (which are 2 different things, Libcrypt is a key written on the disc, Anti-Mod checks for the regional code being sent constantly from an older non-stealth chip as you mentioned).

There is the option of changing the regional flag in PSIO options if that makes any difference to this game?

Yeah, I have that option set to "Auto", which should detect that the game is from Japan and set the region to that automatically. I don't have trouble playing any other Japanese games on my system, so I don't think it's that.

PSIO doesn't spam the license string unlike a non-stealth modchip. We'll have a look into it though.

Cool, thanks.

Just to be clear, I do in fact have an older non-stealth Mod installed on my system, but I'm assuming this is ignored when running games from an SD Card (Since your FAQ states that having a pre-existing modchip will cause no issues with the PS-IO).

Perhaps,

I had the same issue with mod chip being detected in spyro 3 before I lost my PSIO virginity and was using a 1002 pal and programmed all kinds of mod chips available but it still kept moaning about mod chip! . Turned out the problem wasn’t the stealth but the game burn itself - ccd games include something more than the iso / bin version and solved be issue once and for all for me . CCD images are harder to source and I’m not sure if they work on PSIO perhaps Matt can elaborate on that or even convert those ccd images to PSIO
Supported formats retaining the anti piracy sectors ?

Now I don’t claim to be an expert in the problem or that you have the same issue but it’s a suggestion never the less.

That would be Libcrypt, which is the protection used by Spyro 3 and a few other games.

PS-IO does not in fact support CD images with subchannel data (from clonecd and the like), so it is required to use patches for these games. The particular game I am using does not have Libcrypt protection though, and no patch is available, so there must be something else going on.

Tried every license type, still getting the same copy protection screen on bootup.

Anti-mod protection is based on customized or hand-made code (from scratch),
it doesn't use normal cdlib)
non standard behaviour,
no sync between commands,
no interrupt handler
it uses accesing hw regs directly
