zredgemz mentioned DOOM, its one of my favourite games so I decided to make a couple of wallpapers based on DOOM and Final DOOM :D

Image
I've included a PAL version for the wallpaper on the right. You don't require one for the left one.

Just tried both on PAL mode and they seem to line up correctly on the TV I am using. Thanks for sharing these great wallpapers. It makes is look like an official product.
Strange, on my system in PAL mode the part with the ticker message is outside/below the transparent box
Sorry my mistake, after checking you are correct. The scrolling message does not have the black background behind it. Still looks great anyway.

I decided to nock together a couple of wallpapers based on the original grey and blue paint splatter PlayStation BIOS, these versions are made for NTSC mode, I can make PAL versions if anyone is interested (they don't lineup properly in PAL).

Image
EDIT: its only the grey version that requires a PAL version due to the dark grey box the games are listed in.
I would like PAL versions please if possible, many thanks

The blue one looks fine on PAL and NTSC, the grey one is for NTSC but I will make a PAL one once I get back to my computer :D

EDIT: well, that was quick, turns out I already made a PAL version but forgot to post it oops

Just a heads up as I had to determine this the hard way: There's going to be nearest-neighbor banding on PSIO wallpapers unless you take the time to use error diffusion in a paint program and down-sample the color palette to 32,768 colors. Here's the PSX splatter wallpaper with proper 32K color diffusion applied to reduce banding. Try it out an compare results to a default 16 million color bitmap, and you'll see the difference.

Oh, that's nice to know, thanks! I assume this also goes for the cover art.

What sucks is modern paint programs don't simply let you 'work' in a 32K color environment. So if you try to apply a gradient or other effect, the paint program uses 16 million colors regardless. I haven't been able to find a way around this in either Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. I'm of the mind to request it as a feature in one of those programs (or both).

I wonder please if you might be good enough to explain in idiots guide fashion how you do this in say Photoshop? Would be greatly appreciated, Many thanks.

Well I don't have Photoshop anymore, and I recall the old version I had it was like tracking down hidden treasure. Meanwhile Paint Shop Pro makes it easy and obvious:

I see what you mean about banding. I dislike error diffusion dithering if I can avoid it. I used a 15% overlay of 50% dither (black and white pixels alternating) on only the areas which had bad banding. Not prefect, but i don't know any programs that can properly do an ordered dither anymore. I think this this method makes the dither look like how a gameboy camera deals with the posterization.

If I had a choice, my preferred method is Floyd-Steinberg. I'm not really a fan of ordered dithering, unless for imitating a retro look like on a Game Boy like you said.
