CDDA not working (no sound)

Post by vamps » October 9th, 2017, 5:09 am

Hi,

I have finally got around to installing my PSIO and noticed CDDA not working in a few games.

In particular Tekken 3 (PAL or NTSU-U) has no sound during the intro movie screen nor at the character select screen.

The PAL image i had was a multi-bin image, i used the 'PSIO Systems Console' app to turn the 3 BINS + 1 CUE into a single BIN + CUE2.

Code: Select all

Tekken 3 (Europe) (Track 1).bin
Tekken 3 (Europe) (Track 2).bin
Tekken 3 (Europe) (Track 3).bin
Tekken 3 (Europe).cue
Becomes

Code: Select all

Tekken 3 (Europe).BIN
Tekken 3 (Europe).CU2

I also used the same method for an NTSC-U version from emuparadise.

Code: Select all

Tekken 3 (USA) (Track 1).bin
Tekken 3 (USA) (Track 2).bin
Tekken 3 (USA) (Track 3).bin
Tekken 3 (USA).cue
Converts To

Code: Select all

Tekken 3 (USA).BIN
Tekken 3 (USA).CU2

Both versions play sound effects fine, but there is no background music (or audio for movies).

I have tried:
  • K1V3
  • K1V2
  • K1V1
  • OFF

for both images but still no luck.
(i have confirmed each of these modes are actually running via the O Display option when selecting an image)

I can see somebody reported a similar issue (viewtopic.php?f=72&t=1233&p=11924&hilit=CDDA#p11924) but there was never any follow up to the thread.

I am happy to try some recommendations of games that use CDDA (and even XA so i can test both work).

Currently running:
SCPH-7502 (PU-22)
Menu System Version: 2.4 (Build 15)
ARM Firmware: 2.4.8
FPGA Firmware: SDB1 (16/6/2017)
PSX BIOS: v4.1 PAL (318178BF)

CU2's for reference:

Tekken 3 (Europe).CU2

Code: Select all

ntracks 3
size 65:01:59
data1 00:02:00
track02 59:47:58
track03 62:24:61

trk end 65:05:59
Tekken 3 (USA).CU2

Code: Select all

ntracks 3
size 65:01:60
data1 00:02:00
track02 59:47:59
track03 62:24:62

trk end 65:05:60
Any hints as to where i am going wrong would be appreciated.

I have tested it on the current firmware and it works fine for me.

My CU2 sheet looks like this however:

Code: Select all

ntracks 3
size 65:01:60
data1 00:02:00
track2 02:37:03
track3 02:38:73
I'll have to figure out why your track data MSF is so high and figure out if this is a bug in the 'Systems Console'.

I tried replacing my CU2 with the contents of the CU2 as you listed (as the data track appeared to be the same length).
Still no sound.

Here are the bin files of the USA release and MD5 sums

Code: Select all

Tekken 3 (USA) (Track 1).bin 42c63a4674f569de7b1be95d7332cde2
Tekken 3 (USA) (Track 2).bin 2605ec2d2b1aeae797816b851127307c
Tekken 3 (USA) (Track 3).bin c401e2c98525184e6d6be80bd40adbcc
Here is the packed BIN the System Console app output and MD5 sum

Code: Select all

Tekken 3 (USA).BIN f791c7246997f059d70bf68c9d87922a
Happy to try any other game or release you can recommend as a test if required.
(i have tried Destruction Derby 2 & Twisted Metal 2 World Tour with the same CDDA in game background music issue)

The same packed BIN plays FMV sound and background music fine on ePSXe (although i don't think this counts as a suitable test, even if i remove the CU2 file ePSXe plays the sound fine).

I also notice the PSIO Credits screen has no sound. (should there be sound?)

FMV sound and ingame background sound however does work in game during V-Rally: 97 Championship Edition (when played off the original black CD) on this same PSX.

Here is the TOC as seen by ImgBurn (just to verify it had redbook audio)
SLES_002.50 V-Rally: Championship Edition

I might try and rip my original of V-Rally tonight into a BIN + CUE->CU2 and see how that behaves.

Yes, the PSIO credits screen should have sound, and so should the intro video.
If you're not hearing anything from the PSIO credits, it's something pretty serious.

Is your console faulty? I mean, as a test, do you get sound from an original disc??
Some chips do fail (bad solder joints) and hence you don't hear XA or CDDA.

Ok, i have tried a rip of my original V-Rally with IMGBurn and converted the CUE to a CU2 with the PSIO Systems Console App.
Still no sound through the PSIO.

There is definitely background music when playing off the original.

I have also confirmed again that the credits screen has no sound.
I also recall the intro screen having no background music when it first appeared (not sure how to get it back up again though).

Is there a possible situation where CDDA or XA fails to play when the PSIO is connected? eg a bad solder join somewhere?
is there a particular bus that is tapped only for these functions?

I would be ready to blame the console if it wasn't for background music working on V-Rally via the original black disc.
is there any other suitable way to test for CDDA sound that i should try?

Okay, it's not the Switch Board, but it is probably a bad connection on the parallel port. Try cleaning the connection on your PSX or plugging PSIO in/out several times to help 'strike' a good connection.

If it's still not working, send us your cartridge back, and we assess it.
